What are the key trends you believe have the power to transform the way we learn?

We are nowhere near realising the potential impact of data on the way we learn; from how we create experiences, to how we acknowledge skills and experiences that go beyond the formal learning setting, and everything in between.

The theme of EdTechXEurope 2018 is ‘Eternally Learning’. What does eternal learning mean to you?

Eternally learning could refer to people (lifelong, etc) or it could refer to machines. Maybe the singularity will emerge first in learning...

What should the rest of the world learn about EdTech in your country?

We in the UK EdTech sector are waking up to the difference between privacy and security when it comes to learning data. The last ten years have seen a lot of questions about security, but few on privacy. The next ten years will be different. We have the technology; but should we use it?

Why is it important for all players in the EdTech ecosystem to continuously connect, network and learn from each other?

The transformation of education is the result of incremental innovations, not major scientific breakthroughs (at least, not yet). In such an atmosphere we are collectively greater than the sum of our parts. Each minor innovation alone is somewhat insignificant. But put small changes together and you can have a significant impact.

How does your current role allow you to make a difference to education and learning space?

Balancing the rights of individuals with the needs of organisations will be one of our greatest challenges whilst we push the frontiers of what is possible with learning and data. I get to shape the direction of one of the most widely used open source data platforms in the space - with great power comes great responsibility!
